Leesburg,
Virginia
RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION:
PRESENTED May 15, 1996
96-96 ADOPTED May 15, 1996
URGING THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
AND COMMONWEALTHTRANSPORTATION BOARD TO PROHIBIT
TANDEM (DOUBLE) TRAILERS ON ROUTE 15 IN LEESBURG AND
NORTH
WHEREAS, the Town Council was made aware on May 14, 1996, that tandem (double)
trailer trucks were authorized to use Route 15 in Leesburg and Loudoun County by VDOT and the
Commonwealth Transportation Board on May 8, 1996; and
WHEREAS, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution on May 15,
1996, requesting a delay in allowing tandem (double) trailer trucks to use Route 15 in Loudoun
County until further safety and engineering studies are undertaken including a provision for public
input; and
WHEREAS, the Town Council is concerned that operation of tandem (double) trailer trucks
on Route 15 in and north of Leesburg is unsafe because in the opinion of a VDOT traffic engineer
cited in an April 10, 1989, letter, Route 15 "cannot be recommended for use by" twin trailers, 102"
wide trailers or 48' trailers due to the "numerous narrow structures in this area combined with the
horizontal alignment"; and
SECTION I. The Commonwealth Transportation Board and the Virginia Department of
Transportation are hereby strongly urged to prohibit tandem (double) trailer trucks on Route 15 in
and north of Leesburg.
SECTION II. The mayor is hereby authorized to transmit this resolution to the appropriate
authorities.
