Call to order Chair Matt Hughes called the meeting to order at 5:38 p.m. Planning and Economic Development Manager Shannan Campbell confirmed the presence of a quorum. 2. Agenda changes and approval Campbell added an item to consider reappointment of Dani Black as Item 4.E. Motion: Member Dani Black moved to approve the agenda as presented. Member Kim Tesoro seconded. Vote: 3-0. Ayes: Black, Hughes and Tesoro. Nays: None. 3. Minutes review and approval Minutes from Sept. 22, 2021 Black clarified that the work release discussion was referencing the state prison not county. Motion: Tesoro moved to approve minutes as amended. Black seconded. Vote: 3-0. Ayes: Black, Hughes and Tesoro. Nays: None. 4. Discussion items A. FY22 Tourism Development Authority Marketing Plan Campbell said there is $13,000 in the marketing budget. She highlighted printing costs for materials to be placed in the North Carolina Welcome Centers. She estimated $1,500 for initial printing costs but she has heard that the welcome centers go through materials quickly. Black and Tesoro suggested advertising in Asheville, Charlotte and Wilmington to gain overnight visitors. It was noted that Richmond, Virginia, and Greenville and Columbia, South Carolina, also might be good areas in which to advertise. There was discussion that people who come from Danville, Virginia, are not likely spending the night. Hughes suggested considering advertising in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Tourism Development Authority Minutes | 2 of 3 B. Short-term rentals draft rack card Campbell shared a draft rack card featuring short-term rentals. Tesoro suggested featuring short-term rentals representing a range of prices. Campbell plans to add these cards to the Hillsborough Visitors Center and the Orange County Sportsplex. Tesoro said she would like some for the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce, and she asked if UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus would display some. Campbell said she would ask again at the hospital. There was brief discussion of having short-term rentals on one side and The Colonial Inn, Holiday Inn and Microtel on the other side. Black suggested adding bullets of Hillsborough’s major events of the year on one side or creating another rack card. Campbell said she will be contacting short-term rental owners to get tourism information into the units. C. 2022 Meeting Schedule The board considered the meeting schedule in the agenda packet. Motion: Tesoro moved to approve the meeting schedule. Black seconded. Vote: 3-0. Ayes: Black, Hughes and Tesoro. Nays: None. D. Performance venue feasibility next steps There was interest in gathering information in a GoogleDoc for all to share. E. Reappointment of Dani Black Black expressed a willingness to serve another term on the Tourism Development Authority. Nomination: Tesoro nominated Black to serve a second term on the Tourism Development Authority, pending appointment by the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners. Vote: 3-0. Ayes: Black, Hughes and Tesoro. Nays: None. 5. Monthly reports A. Staff report and occupancy tax revenues reports Campbell said occupancy tax revenue remains strong. She shared winter marketing advertisements and campaigns. There was a suggestion to add the reminder that patrons should call before visiting because places are not as open as they had been in the past. B. Board comments Tesoro shared that she heard a radio campaign in South Carolina geared about the importance of teens gaining work experience and life experience before they leave home. The ad was geared towards parents. There was interest in running a similar ad here. 6. Adjournment Motion: Black moved to adjourn the meeting at 6:24 p.m. Tesoro seconded. Vote: 3-0. Ayes: Black, Hughes and Tesoro. Nays: None.
