Town of Leesburg Celebrates Completion of Battlefield
Parkway Segment With Ribbon Cutting on December 17, 2011
Leesburg, VA (December 8, 2011) – At
10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17,
2011, the Town of Leesburg will
celebrate the completion of the section
of Battlefield Parkway from Fort Evans
Road to Edwards Ferry Road with a
ribbon cutting. The ribbon cutting
ceremony will be held at the southern
end of the new roadway section, near
the Fort Evans Plaza II Shopping Center.
Construction on this segment of
Battlefield Parkway began in the fall of 2008 with utility relocation and grading work. During
the summer of 2011, the Town closed the intersection of Battlefield Parkway and Edwards
Ferry Road in order to accelerate construction schedule for two lanes of the new roadway
segment and the reconstruction of the intersection, including the installation of a new traffic
signal. Those two lanes of Battlefield Parkway were completed and opened to traffic on August
13, 2011. The remaining two lanes were opened on December 2, 2011, completing the
segment of Battlefield Parkway from Fort Evans Road to Edwards Ferry Road.
“With the cooperation of Council on closing Edwards Ferry Road through the summer, a good
contractor, and cooperative weather, we were able to complete this project ahead of
schedule,” said Renée LaFollette, Acting Director of Capital Projects. “We appreciate the
patience of the residents and travelling public, and hope you enjoy this new section of
roadway.”
“Our Capital Projects team and all of the contractors for this project have done an outstanding
job bringing this project to completion on time and under budget,” commented John Wells,
Leesburg’s Town Manager. “I know that many citizens were concerned about the construction
schedule last winter, when we had to let the new road bed settle for several months before we
could begin the paving work, but we’ve heard nothing but positive comments since the
roadway has been open.”

“As soon as the first two lanes of this section of Battlefield Parkway opened to traffic, we saw a
noticeable improvement in traffic flow on the east side of Town,” said Calvin Grow, Leesburg’s
Traffic Engineer. “Having this alternate route has relieved congestion on the Route 15 Bypass,
particularly at the Fort Evans and Edwards Ferry intersections.”
When completed, Battlefield Parkway will be an outer ring road around the east side of
Leesburg. The road’s construction has been divided into twelve different segments, nine of
which have been completed by private developers. With the completion of the segment
between Fort Evans Road and Edwards Ferry Road, the only remaining unbuilt segment is the
one from South King Street (Route 15) and the Dulles Greenway. Construction funding for this
last section of Battlefield Parkway is included in VDOT’s current Six Year Plan, with an estimated
completion date in early 2015.
