HomeMy Public PortalAboutAgriculture Commission -- 2006-04-13 MinutesMINUTES of the 7~' MEETING of The BREWSTER AGRICULTURAL COMMISSION Held Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. At the Brewster Town Office Building, 2198 Main Street, Room A Present: Peter Herrmann, Heather Mangelinkx, John MacLellan, Jack Latham, Julie Trzcinskiā€ž Dave Carlson, Washington Chase, Elizabeth Taylor Peter Hemnann called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m Minutes of the March 23, 2006 meeting were accepted and unanimously approved by the board. Mr. Carlson opened discussion on what are the options people have when they are turned down by the building department. Should they come to us to discuss their issues before proceeding to the various boards? What is our role: are we an advisory board for the people with issues and also help the various boards to define the rules. Should we discuss issues on a case by case basis as there are so many agriculture regulations? The issue of agriculture burning was brought up as the fire chief reportedly does not recognize agriculture as being able to burn any time of the year. It was suggested that we have Roy Jones to one of our meetings to discuss this issue. The meeting then went into executive session with Elizabeth Taylor to discuss the land purchase which includes a working bog that will not be allowed to work after the purchase is made per stipulation made by the Town of Dennis which is contributing funds for the purchase. Discussion was made about losing more farmland and that on future purchases we would like to be involved in the negotiations when farmland is involved. However, it was agreed that we would not oppose this purchase at town meeting. Ms. Taylor is looking into grant money for purchase of agriculture land in the future. She suggests we have an agriculture liaison on future purchases depending on what type of land is being purchased; cranberry bog, grazing land, tree farm etc. She also suggested we establish a trust fund for people who would like to leave their property to the town for the purpose of agriculture. Mr. Hernnann will check on this as Dartmouth has such a program. Ms. Trzcinski will report on manure management next meeting. She will have the help of a sub-committee if needed, they include Mr. MacLellan, Ms Mangelinkx and Ms Sheridan. Mr. MacLellan will try to have a working map of farmland for the next meeting. He will also find out when the Harwich town meeting is being held. Also suggested for a future meeting is should the new animal control officer be a member of the agriculture commission? I ~is/ ~.
