HomeMy Public PortalAbout04122022 Autism Awareness Month Autism Awareness Month WHEREAS, the CDC estimates 1 in 44 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including between 23,000 and 48,000 children living in Washington state; and WHEREAS, ASD is a lifelong condition, affecting over 5.4 million adults in the United States, many needing ongoing services and support; and WHEREAS, autism knows no racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, or lifestyle boundaries and affects many within the City of Bothell; and WHEREAS, we recognize that early diagnosis and treatment are essential to those affected by ASD, and provide opportunity for those individuals to lead significantly improved lives; and WHEREAS, we reaffirm our dedication toward equitable and inclusive experiences in Bothell, and support continued education, training, and resources so every person has the opportunity to live full, distinguished, productive lives in their communities; and WHEREAS, we acknowledge that while progress has been made supporting those with ASD, we are only beginning to understand the challenges they face, and dedicate this time to promote better understanding and response to autism. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do hereby proclaim April 2022 as “Autism Awareness Month” in the City of Bothell in honor of the achievements and contributions of those facing the challenges of autism, and encourage all in our community to learn what more they can do to support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
