HomeMy Public PortalAbout1998_04_14_R097 The Town of Leesburg, Virginia RESOLUTION NO. 98-97 A RESOLUTION: PRESENTED April 14, 1998 ADOPTED April 14, 1998 AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO EXECUTE A LETTER TO THE TOWN'S FEDERAL LEGISLATORS COMMENTING ON THE PROPOSED INTERNET TAX FREEDOM ACT WHEREAS, the Intemet Tax Freedom Act would preempt the ability of state and local governments to collect existing, as well as future taxes on Intemet transactions and on-fine services; and WHEREAS, the loss of revenues from the combined preemption of state and local taxes on Intemet transactions would be profound to cities and towns; and WHEREAS, the Town of Leesburg is concerned with the preemptive aspect of the Intemet Tax Freedom Act and whether Intemet services should be or should not be taxed is a decision that should be made by the localities exclusively; and WHEREAS, The Intemet Tax Freedom Act shifts the tax burden onto residents and homeowners. THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia as follows: Mayor James E. Clem is hereby authorized to execute correspondence to federal legislators stating the Town of Leesburg's position on the proposed Intemet Tax Freedom Act. PASSED this 14th day of April, 1998.
