National Police Week 2022
WHEREAS, In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 National Peace
Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which it falls as National Police
Week, to honor the service and sacrifice of officers killed in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, there are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in
communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the
Bothell Police Department; and
WHEREAS, 472 federal, state, tribal and local law enforcement officers died in the
line-of-duty in 2021, including four from Washington State; and
WHEREAS, since 1786, 25,767 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line
of duty, including 353 officers from Washington State; and
WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty was
honored during the National Peace Officers Memorial on Sunday, May 15; and
WHEREAS, tragically, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and the
memorial for fallen officers in Olympia, Washington now bear the name of our
own Officer Jonathan Shoop, who died in the line of duty on July 13, 2020 while
heroically serving Bothell; and
WHEREAS, we recognize that every day, police officers risk their lives to protect
and help others;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do
hereby proclaim May 15-21, 2022, Police Week in the City of Bothell and publicly
acknowledge the brave service of law enforcement officers in Bothell and in
communities across the nation.
