The BREWSTER AGRICULTURAL COMMISSION
Held Thursday, May 10, 2007, at 7:00 p.m.
At the Brewster Town Office Building, 2198 Main Street, Room A
Present: Peter Herrmann, Heather Mangelinkx, Dave Carlson, Stephen Brown, Jack
Latham, and Rebecca Howes
Mr. Hemnann called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m., minutes of the April 12th, 2007
meeting were accepted and unanimously approved by the board.
Mr. Herrmann introduced Mr. David Webber from the Mass Dept. of Agriculture
Resources who is in charge of farmers markets. He gave us suggestions about what other
farm markets include, crafts, non farm food vendors (specialty foods). Some markets are
run by a non profit and others by the towns. If the market is not held on town land he
suggests purchasing insurance covering farm markets from the state which is $360 per
year. Vendors should carry their own liability insurance, the fee charged for vendors to
sell their products should cover the cost of running the market. He also gave us
information about accepting the WIC program and its regulations.
Mr. Latham reported that the catholic church will not allow us to use their parking lot.
Other places suggested for the market would be the town hall, Drummer Boy or the
community gardens.
Mr. Hemnann reported that Irene Winkler of Pilgrim RC & D would like a copy of our
by-law draft for their website.
Next meeting we will see if there is any interest in a farmers market and we will continue
working on mapping the farms of Brewster.
Stephen Brown motioned to adjourn the meeting at 8:50, Mr. Latham seconded all
agreed.
