HomeMy Public PortalAboutr 95:276 Du~c or Adoptio" AU~st 17_~1995 A RESOLUTION OF THE CARTERET URBAN ENTERPRISE ZONE OPPOSING SENATE BILL NO. 2136 AND ASSEMBLY BILL NO. 30t8 WHICH REVISES THE CRITERIA FOR THE URBAN ENTERPRISE ZONE SALES TAX EXEMPTION AND DISALLOWS EXEMPTION FOR SALES OF LUMBER AND MILLWORK WHEREAS, Senator Sinagra on June 19, 1995 introduced Senate Bill No. 2136, and Assemblyman Corodemus introduced Assembly Bill No. 3018,. an Act revising the criteria for Urban Enterprise Zone Sales Tax Exemptions and disallowing such exemption for sales of lumber and millwork, amending P.L~ 1983, C.303.; and WHEREAS, the exemption of lumber and millwork enterprises from the sales tax exemption will affect their operations in the Borough of Carteret and other communities across the State by selectively discriminating against these specific industries and allowing the selective exemption of these industries could be expanded in the future at the discretion of the legislature to any existing enterprise zone entrepreneurs; and WHEREAS, this legislation is particularly targeted at an industry that is dramatically affected by its seasonal nature, mortgage rates and the construction industry in general and adds further adversity in the communities that are designated and in need of rehabilitation and would exacerbate the plight of the lumber and millwork industry; and WHEREAS, this legislation would not only affect the lumber and millwork industry but would also affect the construction industry on which so many union and non- union jobs depend· NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council of the Borough of Carteret Urban Enterprise Zone that they do oppose the passage of Senate Bill No. 2136 and Assembly Bill No. 3018. · our BE IT FURTHER REsoLVED that a copy of the Resolution be forwarded to State Legislators, the State Commissioner of Commerce, the State Commissioner of Labor, the Administrator of the Urban Enterprise Zone, and to our local union shop representatives requesting that they oppose the passage of Senate Bill No. 2136 and Assembly Bill No. 3018.
