Thomas Balch Library to Offer Special Seminar on Using the
Newly Released 1940 Census
Leesburg, VA (May 1, 2012) – The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
recently released all of the images from the 1940 U.S. Census. These records are available to
public free of charge on the NARA website, but the records are not indexed yet.
To provide researchers and genealogists with assistance in accessing the wealth of information
contained in the 1940 Census, the Thomas Balch Library is offering a free seminar on
Wednesday, May 23, 2012. The seminar will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the lower level meeting
room at the Library (208 West Market Street).
Leading the seminar will be Constance Potter, a reference archivist at the National Archives and
Records Administration in Washington, D.C. Ms. Potter is a leading expert on reference relating
to the 1940 Census. She will explain the data collected in the 1940 Census, the procedures
followed by census takers, and help attendees figure out enumeration districts. For more
