A RESOLUTION: NAMING THE RT. 621 PARK SITE

WHEREAS, Council has authorized the construction of a new 20-acre park on Route 621
in the Southeast quadrant, to be opened by early 2003; and
WHEREAS, the park will be located between Heritage High School and Simpson Middle
School and a short distance from Evergreen Mill Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, the park will consist of four baseball/softball fields and one soccer/football
field to be named in honor of individuals or groups who have contributed to the greater good of
Leesburg and who embody the spirit of freedom cherished by all Americans; and
WHEREAS, such honorees will be determined at the discretion of the Town Council with
opportunity for input from all citizens; and
WHEREAS, the park will be utilized by youths and adults from Leesburg and
surrounding communities for generations to come; and
WHEREAS, a tall flag pole bearing the Stars and Stripes of our nation's enduring symbol
of freedom will be a centerpiece of the park's design; and
WHEREAS, the Town Council, in light of the tragic terrorist attacks on the United States
of America on September 11, 2001, seeks a lasting tribute that designates "freedom" as a
perpetual ideal that must never be taken for granted.
THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia that the
Route 621 Park is hereby named, "Freedom Park -- honoring those who gave their lives on
September 11, 2001 and those past, present and future who embody and defend freedom".
