RESOLUTION NO. 2001-195 ADOPTED November 14, 2001
A RESOLUTION: SUPPORTING THE 2002 OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY IN LEESBURG
WHEREAS, the Olympic Games foster a spirit of unity and peace throughout the world;
and
WHEREAS, as hosts of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Salt Lake
Organizing Committee aspires to bring the Olympic Spirit to as many people as possible via the
Olympic Torch Relay, celebrating the rich diversity and history of our country;
WHEREAS, the Olympic Torch will travel through Leesburg during a 46-state tour
before it lights the Olympic Cauldron of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City,
Utah; and
WHEREAS, the historic travel of the Olympic Torch through the Town of Leesburg will
provide educational, entertainment, and tourism benefits to Leesburg residents; and
WHEREAS, staff recommends that the Town Council authorize the Town Manager to
enter into agreement with the Salt Lake Organizing Committee.
THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia that the
town supports the Olympic Torch Relay in the Town of Leesburg, including waiving insurance,
permit, and fee requirements of the special events policy.
