RESOLUTION: NAMING THE BALLS BLUFF PARK SITE

WHEREAS, the Town of Leesburg, in conjunction with the Northem Virginia Regional Park
Authority, purchased 141 acres of land formerly known as the Walde tract along the Potomac River
and immediately adjacent to the Balls Bluff Regional Park and Civil War Battlefield in March 2000;
and
WHEREAS, the Town of Leesburg and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority
agreed to subdivide the parcel in which the Town retained 86 acres and the Park Authority retained
55 acres; and
WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Department is currently completing the master plan
process for future development, and it is an appropriate time to officially name the park site; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation solicited suggestions and
recommendations from the public for consideration as potential names for the park site; and
WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission received and reviewed the
suggestions from the public; and
WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission unanimously endorsed the
name "Veterans Park at Balls Bluff" for the official name of the park site; and
WHEREAS, the Town Council desires a lasting tribute to honor all military veterans who
have given their lives and who embody and defend freedom.
RESOLUTION:

NAMING THE BALLS BLUFF PARK SITE
THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia that the
town-owned Balls Bluff Park site is hereby named, "Veterans Park at Balls Bluff" in honor of all
military veterans who have given their lives past, present, and future and who embody and defend
freedom.
