RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION:
PRESENTED July 9, 2002
2 0 0 2- 1 3 3 ADOPTED July 9, 2002
REAFFIRMING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
WHEREAS, the Town of Leesburg, Virginia wishes to continue using the unedited "Pledge of
Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America" in its public meetings and ceremonies; and
WHEREAS, this pledge has been used widely in the United States since 1954; and
WHEREAS, a Federal court recently raised questions about the fitness of the phrase "under God"
in this pledge; and
WHEREAS, this interpretation fails to understand that our Nation's founders sought to prevent
the imposition of a state religion--not to prevent mentions of God in the public discourse of citizens free
to choose among many religions; and
WHEREAS, the court's interpretation has been met with strong public opposition; and
WHEREAS, our Nation gains its strength from the unity of its towns and cities.
THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia that the
following unedited pledge will be used at the beginning of its public meetings and ceremonies as
appropriate:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it
stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
PASSED this 9~ day of July 2002.
