PRIORITY BUSINESS
- Administrators' Resorts
Denise Fronius reported on the many yearend activities -the last all-school meeting,
last character trait (citizenship), students received gift bags with information about
Brewster Ladies Library, field day, spring concert, and the second grade send-off.
Paul Bradstreet gave his last principal's report with a slide show about the kids and all of
the activities they participated in -simple machines, fifth grade social, Mitch Relin Day,
rockets, egg drop, BUGS (Bringing Up Grades) Kiwanis Awards breakfast, concert and
field day.
Michael Gradone reported on the scholarship night at the High School which Paul
Bradstreet was the featured speaker - he adapted a Dr. Seuss story and the kids loved
it. He wished Mr. Bradstreet well as did the Committee.
Consider Room Rental Rate Review
Mr. Gradone explained that in looking at the rate we charge for classrooms (Head Start
and Cape Cod Collaborative) comparing it to commercial rental costs is difficult
inasmuch as we can only ren± to non-profit organizations and the restrictions which
would be in place for security reasons. Mike Gradone will find out what the Charter
School pays for their space. The Committee will continue to look at the rates to be
certain that these rates are appropriate for the space.
Brewster School Committee Minutes -June 21 2007 Pa e 2
Dugout Fences
Whitecaps President Claire Gradone was available for any questions the Committee
might have. It was moved by Jennifer Rabold, seconded by Marie Enochty and voted
unanimously to approve the installation of a three-foot fence in front of the dugouts on
the baseball field by the Brewster Whitecaps.
Consider Educational Assistants
Mr. Gradone explained the special education enrollment and changes that have
happened since the '07-08 budget was prepared. Two of these changes will be covered
by existing staff and their assignments. This will mean less available staff for
intervention. The third situation needs the Committee's approval for an additional
position. Mr. Gradone noted it is important to advise the Finance Committee and Town
Administrator of the need and asked the Committee to authorize him to hold advertising
the position until August in case there might be a reduction in needs elsewhere that
would offset this increase. It was moved by Jennifer Rabold, seconded by Marie
Enochty and voted unanimously to authorize an educational assistant's position,
advise the Finance Committee and Town Administrator of the need, and not to hire a
person to fill this position until August.
There was discussion of the implications and needs of the intervention program. Denise
noted that the intervention program is working; there are fewer students who will need
intervention next year due to the success of intervention this year.
AGENDA CHANGE
- Item V. B. is moved up in the agenda.
Special Education Placement
Supt. Gradone reviewed the needs of a preschool child enrolled in a program off-Cape
whose parents have decided on a medical procedure this summer that will affect the
child's learning needs and placement in September. Instead of the student beginning
school in Brewster in September the starting date will be in January 2008 at a cost of
$25,000.
