Town Announces Groundbreaking for Downtown
Improvement Project
Ceremony on July 9th at 6:30 p.m. marks the beginning of long-awaited project
Leesburg, VA (June 19, 2012) – The Town of
Leesburg’s Downtown Improvement Project
gets its official start on July 9, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.
with a groundbreaking ceremony for Phases 1A
and 1B of the project. The ceremony will take
place at the northern walkway behind Caulkins
Jewelers (11 South King Street). This spot marks
the symbolic center of the Downtown Improve-
ment Project, as the alley has been the longest
discussed aspect of improvements to the
downtown, dating back approximately 20 years.
The Town Council approved Phases I and II of the Downtown Improvement Project in September
2010. Phase 1A consists of improvements to both walkways from the Town parking garage to King
Street and improvements to the alley from Loudoun Street to Market Street. The improvements will
include improved storm drainage facilities, new landscaping, lighting in the walkways, formalized
street print crosswalks and pedestrian refuge areas against the garage.
Phase 1B of the project, which is also represented by the groundbreaking ceremony, consists of
improvements to the East End Triangle near Mom’s Apple Pie, where Market and Loudoun Streets
converge. Improvements in this area include removal of the Dominion Power pole at the
intersection, new curb and gutter, a stone retaining wall, landscaping, new brick walkways and
decorative lighting.
Both Phases 1A and 1B are anticipated to be completed early this fall. Rain date for the ground
breaking will be July 10 at 6:30 p.m.
