Date: February 15, 2008
Time: 2pm-3:30pm
Place: Council on Aging Building
Members Present: Jean Sears, Brian I,adley, Maureen and Robert Steinmann and James
Geisler, advocate.
Review of meeting on Jan. 25"' with Maureen and Robert Steinmann and Charles
Sumner: The three agreed that the best way to fund the installation of an automatic door
opener on town hall was to request it in a letter rather than use a citizen's petition. The
Steinmanns gave such a letter, akeady approved by our committee, to the town manager.
It was subsequently reviewed and accepted by the selectmen and the request will appear
on the May town meeting warrant. Charles Sumner said that he would like our committee
to come up with a Master Plan re the needs of the handicapped in using Brewster's town
buildings and facilities and make recommendations to him and the other town department
heads. If approved, the costs would be worked into the town's capital spending budget.
Discussed what we found for grant opportunities for replacement beach wheelchair.
Christopher Reeve's Quality of Life site seemed a possibility. Citizen advocate, Jim
Geisler, was also checking into other sources of funding.
Brian Ladley talked briefly about CORD and CART. Also informed us as to how one
goes about requesting a CORD translator for town meetings.
There was some discussion about the future possibility of caption encryption of town
meetings on the local cable station.
Brief discussion about emergency preparedness for those with disabilities. Jean
mentioned up-and-coming Emergency Preparedness Fair on March 29`''.
Reviewed survey letter. We have to decide what is best way to do it. Should specific
questions be asked? Mailing list? Will talk about it at our March 21st meeting.
The Steinmanns will again be judges this year in the schoolchildren's handicap poster
competition. The winning posters will be published in the Cape Cod Disability Access
Directory published by JAMS Specialists, Inc. The judging will take place on April 17`t'.
