Town of Leesburg Hosts 12th Annual Leadership in the Law
Summer Camp for Rising High School Seniors
Leesburg, VA (June 19, 2012) –
Twenty-four rising high school
seniors from Loudoun County and
Fauquier County are participating
in the annual Leadership in the
Law Summer Camp, hosted by the
Town of Leesburg this week.
Now in its twelfth year, Law Camp
was a vision of Loudoun County
Circuit Court Judge Thomas D.
Horne.
The week-long camp provides
students with the opportunity to
gain in-depth knowledge of the legal system. Students work directly with local judges, lawyers,
law clerks and other professionals who provide instruction and hands-on demonstrations. The
program introduces students to the practices of criminal and civil law, courtroom procedures,
crime scene investigation and the handling and preservation of evidence. Student legal teams
receive case outlines and through the week, they study the facts, visit the crime scene,
interview witnesses and experts, analyze evidence, develop exhibits, and prepare witnesses and
experts for trial. The camp concludes with mock jury trials in which the students act as
attorneys for prosecution and defense, with sitting circuit court judges presiding. Volunteers
will serve as the plaintiffs, defendants, witnesses and jurors. The mock trials will be held at the
Loudoun County Courthouse, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012.
“Law Camp is an amazing experience for young people to learn about the legal system
firsthand,” said Jeanette Irby, Leesburg’s Town Attorney and the 2012 Law Camp Chair. “We
take students from all of the high schools in Loudoun and Fauquier Counties, both public and
private, as well as home-schooled students. The most rewarding part of Law Camp is watching
the students try their cases on Friday morning in front of the jury.”

In addition, the students participate in recreational team-building activities such as a ropes
course and orienteering at Balls Bluff Battlefield Regional Park. On Wednesday, June 20th, the
students will visit the United States Supreme Court in Washington, DC. The overnight camp
began on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Camp Meadowkirk near Middleburg, Virginia, and will
conclude on Friday, June 22, 2012, with the mock trials.
The Leadership in the Law Summer Camp is offered to students at no cost and is sponsored by
the Loudoun County Bar Foundation, the Loudoun County Bar Association, the Fauquier County
Bar Association, and private law firms in the Loudoun County and Fauquier County areas.
