JUNE 20, 2008 MEETING NOTES
0
Meeting began at 2pm at the COA building. c
Members present: Jean Sears, Brian Ladley, Robert Steinmann, Maureen Steinmann
Members absent: Heidi Geisler, Marge Geisler. Also absent was James Geisler, advocate ~
Guest: Christine Glasheen
Our committee was happy to welcome Christine Glasheen. Christine received our survey and decided to come
to our meeting. She is going to apply for an appointment to our committee. Everyone is delighted that she is
going to join us in our work.
Summary of ongoing survey: Approximately 40 surveys have been returned-- some with very good
suggestions. Maureen Steinmann will send notice to the Cape Codder reminding Brewster residents and
visitors of our ongoing survey.
Beach wheelchair issues: Maureen Steinmann read an email from Wendy Allegrone, Brewster's Recreation
Director, stating that the beach wheelchair could be signed out through the Fire Department on the weekends.
Presently, the beach wheelchair is available only during the week through the Council on Aging. She also
stated that she has raised $200 towazds the purchase of a replacement for our current beach wheelchair.
Jean Sears will make sure that the Fire Dept. gets a key to the shed where the beach wheelchair is kept and all
the necessary information and papers the Council on Aging uses when loaning out the beach wheelchair.
Maureen will send notice to Cape Codder regarding the availability of beach wheelchair.
Automatic Door Opener at COA: Tom Thatcher will get a couple of quotes for the side door of the COA
where we hope to have an automatic door opener installed. Because the door is solid wood and is approached
by both a ramp and stairs, the committee considers it to be a 'blind' door. Possibly a glass insert in the door
panel would alleviate that problem and make it safer when the automatic door opener is installed. We want to
have all the necessary information before we go ahead with our request for the automatic door opener on the
fall warrant.
Brian Ladley reported that he as part of his job with CORD will be a member of the REPC (Regional
Emergency Prepazedness Committee). Brian's main responsibility will be identifying and addressing the
needs of those with disabilities in an emergency shelter. Information from our ongoing survey regarding
special needs will be given to Brian for his files. Some items re emergency shelters mentioned at our meeting
were bathroom facilities (high enough toilet seats) and beds (beds that would not be as low as cots which are
very difficult for some people to get out of). Maureen stated that an Emergency Preparedness Day is planned
for Saturday July 19, 2008, at Drummer Boy Park, by Lt. George Bausch. Maureen said she would find out
the time and email it to Brian and committee members.
Jean Sears retired as Chairman of the All Citizens Access Committee after many years of service in that
position. She recommended Maureen Steinmann to be the new Chairman and the committee agreed. Jean will
remain a member of the committee.
Today is our last meeting until September 19, 2008 at 2pm. Meeting ended at 3pm.
Respectfully submitted by Maureen Steinmann
