A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON,
CALIFORNIA, COMMEMORATING THE 60™ ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1963
MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR JOBS AND FREEDOM
WHEREAS, 2023 marks the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and
Freedom (“March on Washington”) held on August 28, 1963 in Washington DC; and
WHEREAS, the March on Washington was one of the most influential events in American History;
and
WHEREAS, organized in response to high levels of African American unemployment,
work that offered most African Americans only minimal wages and poor job mobility,
systematic disenfranchisement of many African Americans and the persistence of racial
segregation in the American South, the March on Washington called for collective action to demand civil
rights protections and economic justice; and
WHEREAS, speakers at the March on Washington demanded effective Civil Rights
legislation that included fair access to housing, integrated education, voting rights protections, and work
with dignity to defeat unemployment; and
WHEREAS, the 250,000 marchers, representing civil rights groups, labor organizations
and religious entities from all over the country, and traveling on planes, buses, trains and on their feet,
were asked to carry the message of equal commitment and equal effort for jobs and freedom back home
to their friends and neighbors; and
WHEREAS, as a result of the March on Washington, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and
the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were passed and demonstrated the impact of the importance of government
and community collaboration; and
WHEREAS, the City of Carson is proud to recognize and commemorate the March on Washington
in its support of civil rights and other related social justice issues impacting the residents of Carson and
elsewhere; and
WHEREAS, the City Council now sees fit to adopt this Resolution proclaiming its recognition and
commemoration of the 60" Anniversary of the March on Washington.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON, CALIFORNIA, DOES HEREBY
RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The recitals above are true and correct and are incorporated herein by this reference.
SECTION 2. The City Council hereby approves this Resolution commemorating the 60"
Anniversary of the March on Washington.

SECTION 3. The City Council declares that, should any provision, section, paragraph, sentence
or word of this Resolution be rendered or declared invalid by any final court action in a court of competent
jurisdiction or by reason of any preemptive legislation, the remaining provisions, sections, paragraphs,
sentences or words of this Resolution as hereby adopted shall remain in full force and effect.
SECTION 4. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution and enter it into the
book of original Resolutions.
SECTION 5. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
