HomeMy Public PortalAbout11012022 Native American Heritage Month Proclamation Native American Heritage Month WHEREAS, Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Native people; and WHEREAS, Native Americans have played a unique and distinguished role in our nation’s history through vital contributions to government, education, religion, architecture, environment and security; and WHEREAS, Washington state is home to 29 federally recognized Indian tribes with well over 300,000 Washington residents identifying as American Indian/Alaska Native alone or in combination with another race; and WHEREAS, all indigenous people are respected and celebrated as part of Bothell’s history, land that was first inhabited by the s-tsah-PAHBSH, or “Willow People”, who were members of a larger group called the hah-chu-AHBSH, or “People of the Lake”, and the Duwamish Tribe; and WHEREAS, Native nations were separated from their home lands due to battles, genocide, and western expansion and while honoring the customs and accomplishments of Native Americans, we also acknowledge our nation’s history of colonialism that has inflicted discrimination and deprivation upon indigenous people; and WHEREAS, we recognize the historical importance of local and national tribes as well as the continued enrichment Native American heritage adds to all aspects of our society; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, do hereby proclaim the month of November as “Native American Heritage Month” in the City of Bothell, and encourage our community to actively seek knowledge about the original inhabitants of North America and commit to preserve Native American heritage and traditions for generations to come.
