Ida Lee Women’s Tennis Team Advances to USTA Sectional
Tournament
Leesburg, VA (August 2, 2012) – The Volley Vixens, the 2.5 Women’s League Champion
representing Leesburg’s Ida Lee Park, captured a berth in the upcoming USTA Sectional
tournament by winning their group title at the district playoffs on July 14, 2012, in Norfolk, VA.
The team defeated squads from Richmond and Lynchburg before topping Virginia Beach in a
thrilling final match that came down to the very end.
Team Captain Lori Miller, competing in the singles position for her team, mounted an incredible
rally to give her team the winning point. With the team matches tied at 1-1, and her singles
match tied 1-set apiece, Miller found herself down 5-9 in a tie-breaker to decide which team
would move on to the sectional tournament. Miller fought off 5 match points and completed
the comeback by taking the tie-breaker 12-10, giving her team the district title. Miller went
unbeaten in her singles matches on the weekend, as did doubles teammates Sharon DiRenzo
and Lisa Atkins, while Sally Travis contributed a doubles win playing alongside Miller.
Ida Lee’s Volley Vixens now qualify for Sectional play against team champions from USTA Mid-
Atlantic Sections of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. The sectional
tournament is scheduled for August 10-11, 2012 in Norfolk, Virginia, at the Fowlkes-Stevens
Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University. The section winner will advance to
the USTA Team National Tournament in Tucson, Arizona in September.
Members of the Volley Vixens are Lori Miller (Captain), Kim Fulham, Sharon DiRenzo, Lisa
Atkins, Jill Adler, Karen Gettier, Sally Travis, Angela Hoffman and Kathy Haberman. The team is
coached by Ida Lee Tennis Professional Don Wright.
