HomeMy Public PortalAboutTOL PR 2012-08-03 National Night Out Town of Leesburg News Release For Immediate Release Leesburg Joins Cities Nationwide for “America’s Night Out Against Crime” on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 Leesburg, VA (July 30, 2012) – On Tuesday, August 7, 2012, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, residents throughout Leesburg are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with their neighbors and community police officers as part of the 29th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co- sponsored locally by the Leesburg Police Department, will involve over 37 million people in 15,325 communities from all fifty states as well as U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. National Night Out is designed to: 1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness 2. Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts 3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships 4. Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. The Leesburg Police Department will hold two National Night Out events this year. The town’s primary National Night Out location will be at the Sycamore Hill neighborhood’s clubhouse (402 Ginkgo Terrace NE), with a satellite event at the Sunrise Assisted Living Center (246 West Market Street). Residents are invited to come to the Sycamore Hill location to meet Leesburg Police Officers and McGruff the Crime Dog. The Police Department will have police cars, police motorcycles and the LPD Mobile Command Center on display at the event. The Crime Prevention Unit will be on hand with crime prevention information for citizens and the Leesburg Police Citizens Support Team will offer Child Identification Kits. There will be door prizes for children and free food for all. The event begins at 6:00 pm and is open to everyone. In addition, they will provide information on the “Lock, Take, Hide or Lose” program, crime prevention, gun locks and internet safety for children. The Target Corporation is the NNO 2012 corporate sponsor.
