HomeMy Public PortalAbout2006_08_08_r151 The Town of Leesburg, Virginia PRESENTED August 8. 2006 RESOLUTION NO. 2006-151 ADOPTED August 8. 2006 A RESOLUTION: REAFFIRMING THE TOWN'S COMMITMENT TO INCLUSION AS A FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF OUR COMMUNITY WHEREAS, The Town of Lees burg is committed to inclusion and tolerance as a fundamental aspect of our community; and WHEREAS, the Town of Leesburg recognizes that our community's diversity should be embraced as it bolsters the high quality of life, opportunity, and economic prosperity for our residents and businesses; and WHEREAS, it should be clear that intolerance is not acceptable, understanding of our diversity should be encouraged because to do otherwise diminishes the spirit, prosperity, health, safety, and welfare of entire community; and WHEREAS, the health, safety, and welfare of Leesburg residents and businesses, including security of individuals, families, and property, quality of life, and economic opportunity, are of the utmost importance to the Leesburg Town Council. Acts of intolerance that are detrimental to that health, safety, welfare, whether systemic and institutional, physical, or verbal, are unacceptable and not reflective of the spirit of our community; and WHEREAS, cities, towns, and counties are the best place to make inclusiveness an everyday priority; and WHEREAS, local elected officials can and should lead the way forward in making inclusiveness a priority in America's cities and towns; and The Town of -2- Leesbul.fW~OLUTION: REAFFIRMING THE TOWN'S COMMITMENT TO INCLUSION AS Virginia A FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF OUR COMMUNITY WHEREAS, the National League of Cities has designed the Partnership for Working Toward Inclusive Communities to support cities and towns in their commitment to inclusion; and WHEREAS, the National League of Cities and its members, including the Town, believe an inclusive community promotes equal opportunity and fairness; and WHEREAS, the National League of Cities and its members, including the Town, believe an inclusive community promotes citizen participation and engagement; and WHEREAS, the National League of Cities has invited local officials to join the Partnership for Working Toward Inclusive Communities and to make a commitment to building more inclusive communities in their own cities and town. THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Council of the Town of Leesburg, in Virginia hereby reaffirms our commitment to inclusion as a fundamental aspect of our community, pledges active efforts to seek to achieve that goal, and urges all citizens of Leesburg to join together to support this effort. FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town of Lees burg is opposed to crimes inspired by hate directed at any group of people. FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town of Leesburg in Virginia joins the Partnership for Working Toward Inclusive Communities. PASSED this 8th day of August 2006. n C. mstattd, Mayor Town of Lees burg a7Ud
