HomeMy Public PortalAbout01172023 MLK Jr Day Jan 16Martin Luther King, Jr. Day WHEREAS, observed for the first time on January 20, 1986, we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day every third Monday in January as a time to remember and celebrate Dr. King's life and achievements; and WHEREAS, the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's has profoundly impacted the course of American history and continues to shape the direction and debate of our society; and WHEREAS, as one of the greatest leaders of that 20th century movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice, and opportunity for all, and challenged all Americans to participate in the never-ending work of building a more perfect union; and WHEREAS, Dr. King's many notable speeches, sermons and writings are among the most revered in American history and continue to guide and inspire us in addressing challenges in our communities; and WHEREAS, even with the gains of the Civil Rights Movement there are many goals and needs that must be pursued to continue our commitment to achieve equal rights and economic justice in our society; and WHEREAS, inspired by Dr. King's legacy and informed by his wisdom and vision, let us carry forward the spirit of hopefulness and rededicate ourselves to keeping his dream alive and remember that we are united together as one community. NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Bothell City Council, do hereby recognize January 16th as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the City of Bothell. Signed this 17th day of January, 2023. Mason Thompson, Mayor
