HomeMy Public PortalAbout2006_12_12_r216 The Town of Leesburg, Virginia PRESENTED: December 12.2006 RESOLUTION NO. 2006-216 ADOPTED December 12.2006 A RESOLUTION: REQUESTING THE VIRGINIA DEPARlMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO EXPEDITE AN INTERSECTION ANALYSIS FOR THE INTERSECTION OF ROUTE 15 BYPASS AND ROUTE 15 BUSINESS WHEREAS, the intersection of the Route 15 Bypass and Route 15 Business was built over 35 years ago when the Route 15 Bypass was constructed; and is the primary approach to Leesburg from the North; and WHEREAS, this intersection has some uncommon traffic movements and can be confusing to drivers, especially during the frequent periods of heavy traffic that occur daily; and WHEREAS, 23,000 vehicles per day travel through this intersection, which exceeds the safe capacity of this location; and WHEREAS, Virginia Department of Transportation is currently analyzing this intersection; and WHEREAS, the analysis will have two (2) objectives; the first will be to determine short term low cost improvements; and WHEREAS, the second will be to look at longer term solutions such as an interchange or roundabout; and WHEREAS, the Town Council is concerned with the safety of the intersection. THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia as follows: SECTION 1. The Virginia Department of Transportation is requested to complete the analysis of the Route 15 Bypass and Route 15 Business intersection as quickly as possible. The -2- A RESOLUTION: REQUESTING THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO EXPEDITE AN INTERSECTION ANAL YSIS FOR THE INTERSECTION OF ROUTE 15 BYPASS AND ROUTE 15 BUSINESS short-term, low-cost improvements should include guardrail, improved lane markings, wider shoulders, rumble strips, and improved street lighting. SECTION II. Long-term improvements for other approaches to Leesburg, including Dry Mill Road (Rt. 699), Evergreen Mill Road (Rt. 621), Sycolin Road (Rt. 643), and Edwards Ferry Road (Rt. 773) should be evaluated in an additional study. SECTION III. Endorsement and support of this resolution by the Governor of Virginia, Loudoun County members of the Virginia General Assembly and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is hereby requested.
