HomeMy Public PortalAbout2007_09_25_r141 The Town of Leesburg, Virginia PRESENTED: September 25. 2007 RESOLUTION NO. 2007-141 ADOPTED: September 25. 2007 A RESOLUTION: REQUESTING ASSISTANCE FROM UNITED STATES CONGRESSMAN FRANK WOLF, U.S. SENATORS JOHN W. WARNER AND JIM WEBB TO HAVE THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL POST OFFICE IN OR NEAR THE TOWN OF LEESBURG, VIRGINIA WHEREAS, approximately 8 years ago the U.S. Postal Service was planning to secure a site in Leesburg for a new Post Office Facility; and WHEREAS, acquisition of a site by the U.S. Postal Service was not completed and halted due to lack of funds; and WHEREAS, the need for additional postal facilities in Leesburg has become more acute with the growth in and around Leesburg during the past 8 years; and WHEREAS, the existing U.S. Postal Service facilities m Leesburg are grossly inadequate; and WHEREAS, Virginia State Senator Charles Waddell (Retired) delivered a presentation to the Leesburg Town Council during the Town Council Work Session on September 24, 2007 describing the overcrowded, congested, and inadequate conditions at the main Leesburg Postal Facility on Catoctin Circle; and WHEREAS, Senator Waddell expressed concern regarding the traffic safety of patrons and employees, as well as the volume of Leesburg and Loudoun County residents served by limited Leesburg facilities; and WHEREAS, Senator Waddell's statement is attached to this resolution and strongly supports the need for additional U.S. Postal Facilities in the Town of Leesburg; and -2- A RESOLUTION: REQUESTING ASSISTANCE FROM UNITED STATES CONGRESSMAN FRANK WOLF, U.S. SENATORS JOHN W. WARNER AND JIM WEBB TO HAVE THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL POST OFFICE IN OR NEAR THE TOWN OF LEES BURG, VIRGINIA WHEREAS, the U.S. Postal Service has no current plans to provide or establish additional postal services in Leesburg or the Leesburg area; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Leesburg and the residents of Loudoun County served by the Leesburg Post Office are entitled to better U.S. Postal Facilities. THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia as follows: SECTION I. The U.S. Postal Service is requested to provide additional postal services including a new Post Office in or near the Town of Leesburg as soon as possible and restore funding in the Postal Services Capital Improvements Program for these facilities. SECTION II. Assistance is requested from U.S. Congressman Frank Wolf, U.S. Senators John W. Warner and Jim Webb to have the U.S. Postal Service provide an additional Post Office in or near the Town of Leesburg. SECTION III. Also requested is refurbishment of the current Catoctin Circle Post Office facility and funding for this work in the Postal Services Capital Improvements Program.
