PRIORITY BUSINESS
Administrators' Reports
Denise Fronius reported that 64 students have registered for kindergarten; presented
student work in writing outlining the beginning in kindergarten with students working on a
journal with the goal at the end of the year of them being able to write a complete
sentence, 1 St grade's goal is to be writing complete paragraphs, and at the end of
second grade to write a story with a beginning that will grab you; students decorated
(colored, painted) brown paper bags for Earth Day which will mean 1,000 bags will be
distributed to businesses to use; on June 6 students will perform at 1:30 with the theme
"The Roar of Musical Bats"; and finished up with a review of the Character Traits "Bridge
to a Better Me." She also had with her the cut-out of a coyote Mr. Andujar made to put
on the fields to keep the geese from being on the fields - it works! Mr. Andujar is retiring
this year and will be sorely missed.
Keith Gauley reported on the success of the Community Reads Day and BESPIE's
Read-a-thon which has challenged the students to read 30 minutes a day for a total of
125,000 minutes as the school-wide goal; he reviewed the NCLB Report Card for the
Committee which will be sent home to all students; the Regional Baseball League will
bring a temporary batting cage to the grounds which will be removed after the season;
Destination Imagination participants did very well at the competition; and the school has
received a Friends of Pleasant Bay Grant to support 4th grade students' scientific study
of the Pleasant Bay ecosystem next year.
Town Meetina Preparation
Liz Argo spoke to the Committee regarding the Citizens' Petition which will be on the
Town Meeting Warrant to install a solar panel on the roof of Stony Brook Elementary
School. She reviewed costs, funding, savings in the future, durability of the panels and
answered questions concerning maintenance, grant funding, bidding process if voted at
Town Meeting. The Committee discussed the fact that they have cut their budget and
feel they should not endorse this proposal. Mr. Jones moved that the Committee
authorize the installation of the solar panel(s) on the Stony Brook Elementary School
Brewster School Committee Minutes -April 77. 2008 PacLe 2
should the Town vote funding this project. The motion was seconded by Jennifer
Rabold and voted unanimously.
Committee members discussed how best to present the budget and the request for a
supplemental appropriation. Mr. Jones felt the simple statement that the need for the
supplemental appropriation was due to unexpected special education expenses. Mr.
Schober (Finance Committee Chair) will have fifteen minutes at Town Meeting to outline
the Finance Committee's view of the Town's fiscal condition and he suggested to Mr.
Gradone that the School Committee may want to respond. Ms. Enochty said her real
concern is the Regional Agreement which each member Town has to vote in favor of to
set assessments. Should the Town not vote this the results would be devastating to the
District. There was a discussion of what this means and the need to get this information
to citizens so they will come to Town Meeting and support the Regional Agreement.
Supt. Gradone will send an email to clearly explain what the Regional Agreement means
so this can be shared with the public.
- Consider Surplus
It was moved by Jennifer Rabold, seconded by Marie Enochty and voted unanimously
to declare the Gravely Pro 50 Mower with grass catcher surplus.
