HomeMy Public PortalAbout2008_02_12_R033 The Town of Leesburg, Virginia PRESENTED February 12,2008 RESOLUTION NO. 2008-33 ADOPTED February 12,2008 A RESOLUTION: IN RECOGNITION AND SUPPORT OF LOUDOUN ASSOCIATION OF RETARDED CITIZENS (LARe) AND THEIR ENDEAVOR TO RELOCATE THE AURORA SCHOOL FOR DISABLED CHILDREN WHEREAS, the Leesburg Town Council supports the LARC; and WHEREAS, the Leesburg Town Council wishes to support the Aurora School for Disabled Children; and WHEREAS, the Leesburg Town Council recognizes that LARC and the Paxton Board of Trustees will be rehabilitating and improving the Paxton property for the eventual location of the Aurora School for Disabled Children and that said construction will take 18 months; and WHEREAS, Paxton was previously used as a home for orphaned children and a daycare facility because it was the intent of the Paxton Estate that the entire property continue to be used for the benefit of children; and WHEREAS, the Leesburg Town Council recognizes that the Aurora School for Disabled Children will need an interim location at Elijah Gate on Harrison Street; and that this site was once used as a school; and WHEREAS, the Leesburg Town Council recognizes that both the permanent site and temporary site would require a special exception in order to operate a school at either location; and WHEREAS, the Leesburg Town Council intends to support a special exception so long as all Town Code requirements are met for both the temporary and permanent location of the Aurora School and recognizes that time is of the essence to begi~ construction ofthe project; and WHEREAS, the Leesburg Town Council ,acknowledges that the interior building renovation process can begin immediately but that no school or day care can be operated on the properties until the appropriate exception uses have been approved; and -2- A RESOLUTION: IN RECOGNITION AND SUPPORT OF THE LARC AND THEIR ENDEAVOR TO RELOCATE THE AURORA SCHOOL FOR DISABLED CHILDREN WHEREAS, the Leesburg Town Council acknowledges that exterior building renovations can begin after appropriate review by the Board of Architectural Review because both properties are located in the H-l Old and Historic District. THEREFORE, RESOLVED that the Council of the Town of Leesburg recognizes the significant contribution that the Aurora School makes to the community and directs staff to expedite the required special exception applications.
