HomeMy Public PortalAboutTOL PR 2012-08-21 Downtown construction start Town of Leesburg News Release For Immediate Release Town of Leesburg Begins Construction of Downtown Improvement Project Phase I will include alley and walkways to King Street and the East End Triangle Leesburg, VA (August 21, 2012) – This week, crews began construction of the long-awaited Phase I of the Downtown Improvements Project. This phase, which is slated to be complete by November 9, 2012, includes improvements to the alley behind the Town’s parking garage and the two walkways that lead to King Street. The project also includes improvements to the East End Triangle near Mom’s Apple Pie, at the intersection of Loudoun and East Market Streets. “We are excited to start building what we have been showing for a long time,” said Scott Parker, the Town’s Project Manager for the improvements.”People are genuinely excited about the improvements, as is all the staff involved in the project.” He continued by stating that there has been a massive outreach effort, and that communication is the key. “We will keep the businesses and owners informed every step of the way, and we will try to accommodate and react to needs or concerns as they arise,” he added. The Phase I improvements include new brick sidewalks in the walkways, drainage improvements, new decorative pedestrian lighting, a formalized crosswalk to the Town garage, a pedestrian refuge area, new landscaping and decorative features at the walkways’ entrances to King Street. The entire alley will be repaved from Market Street to Loudoun Street, as well. At the East End Triangle, the utility pole at the corner will be removed, the triangle will be formalized with a new stone knee wall, brick paving, and landscaping that will include a large maple tree. In addition, the existing Martin Luther King Jr. memorial plaque will be incorporated into a formal part of the design. The plaque is one of the markers installed by the Town last year to formally designate the route of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day march. (more) TOL PR 2012-08-21 Downtown construction start Page 2 Next spring, the Town will embark on Phase II of the Downtown Improvement Project, which will include improvements to Loudoun Street from King Street to the East End triangle. “All of these improvements will go a long way towards tying the various visual elements of the Historic Downtown together,” Parker concluded.
