Town of Leesburg Begins Construction of Downtown
Improvement Project
Phase I will include alley and walkways to King Street and the East End Triangle
Leesburg, VA (August 21, 2012) – This week,
crews began construction of the long-awaited
Phase I of the Downtown Improvements Project.
This phase, which is slated to be complete by
November 9, 2012, includes improvements to the
alley behind the Town’s parking garage and the
two walkways that lead to King Street. The
project also includes improvements to the East
End Triangle near Mom’s Apple Pie, at the
intersection of Loudoun and East Market Streets.
“We are excited to start building what we have
been showing for a long time,” said Scott Parker,
the Town’s Project Manager for the
improvements.”People are genuinely excited
about the improvements, as is all the staff
involved in the project.” He continued by stating
that there has been a massive outreach effort, and that communication is the key. “We will
keep the businesses and owners informed every step of the way, and we will try to
accommodate and react to needs or concerns as they arise,” he added.
The Phase I improvements include new brick sidewalks in the walkways, drainage
improvements, new decorative pedestrian lighting, a formalized crosswalk to the Town garage,
a pedestrian refuge area, new landscaping and decorative features at the walkways’ entrances
to King Street. The entire alley will be repaved from Market Street to Loudoun Street, as well.
At the East End Triangle, the utility pole at the corner will be removed, the triangle will be
formalized with a new stone knee wall, brick paving, and landscaping that will include a large
maple tree. In addition, the existing Martin Luther King Jr. memorial plaque will be incorporated
into a formal part of the design. The plaque is one of the markers installed by the Town last
year to formally designate the route of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day march.
