HomeMy Public PortalAbout2008_05_28_R074 Announcing Leesburgs 250th Anniversary Celebration The Town of Leesburg, Virginia PRESENTED May 28. 2008 RESOLUTION NO. 2008-74 ADOPTED May 28. 2008 A RESOLUTION: ANNOUNCING THE TOWN OF LEESBURG'S 250TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION (1758 TO 2008) WHEREAS, 2008 marks the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the Town of Leesburg, a historic and memorable event which will be commemorated through out the year; and WHEREAS, in September of 1758, by an act of the Virginia House of Burgesses, Nicolas Minor laid out 60 acres of land with lots and streets for a town adjoining the Loudoun County Court House to be called Leesburg; and WHEREAS, as military history is memorialized in areas throughout Leesburg, including significant events that occurred during the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the American Civil War and the Spanish American War; and WHEREAS, Leesburg served as the safe-storage place for irreplaceable United States government documents including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution in August 1814 during the War of 1812, and WHEREAS, many famous and influential individuals have contributed to the lasting legacy of the Town of Leesburg including John Janney, Colonel Elijah V. White, James Monroe, George C. Marshall and Arthur Godfrey; and WHEREAS, Leesburg continues to preserve its historical identity while embracing commercial residential, cultural and ethnic growth which have made it the largest town in Northern Virginia. THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia as follows: - 2 - A RESOLUTION: ANNOUNCING THE TOWN OF LEESBURG'S 250TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION (1758 TO 2008) The Town will commemorate its 250th Anniversary through out the year culminating with the Birthday Celebration on September 14, 2008 and Court and Market Days on October 18, 2008.
