A RESOLUTION: CLOSING OF THE LAWSON ROAD BRIDGE AT TUSCARORA
CREEK
WHEREAS, Resolution #96-222, adopted on October 23, 1996, by the Town Council
stated, "The crossing of Lawson Road at Tuscarora Creek will remain open at this time subject to
closure at a future date in conformance with the Town Plan"; and
WHEREAS, the Town Council recognizes the temporary nature of the Lawson Road
Bridge; and
WHEREAS, the Town Council finds it necessary to close the bridge in times of heavy
rain due to flooding; and
WHEREAS, it is the Council's desire to establish an effective barrier that will protect
users of the bridge and adjacent properties; and
WHEREAS, the Town will erect a gate at the south entrance to the bridge at a cost not to
exceed $2,000 as soon as practical; and
WHEREAS, the segment of Battlefield Parkway between Route 7 and Kincaid Boulevard
is under construction by VDOT and is planned for completion is September, 2009; and
WHEREAS, when Battlefield Parkway is opened to Route 7, it will provide permanent,
safe and convenient access directly to Route 7 for the residents of the Southeast quadrant and
eliminate the need to keep the Lawson Road Creek crossing open for vehicular traffic.

THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia as
follows:
SECTION I. That the Town Council directs the Town Manager to erect a gate at the
south entrance to the bridge at a cost not to exceed $2,000 as soon as practical and reasonably
ensure gate is not breachable by vehicles.
SECTION II. The Town Council directs that the Lawson Road Bridge will be
permanently closed to vehicular traffic except for emergency vehicles as deemed necessary
within 24 hours after opening of Battlefield Parkway between Route 7 and Kincaid Boulevard.
