WHEREAS, on February 26, 1987 President Ronald Reagan officially proclaimed March
National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, calling for understanding,
encouragement and opportunities to help persons with developmental disabilities lead
productive and fulfilling lives; and
WHEREAS, we recognize the many accomplishments of people with a developmental
disability, who are of all racial, ethnic, educational, social, and economic backgrounds, and
who are contributing neighbors, co-workers, classmates, voters, friends, and valued
members of our community; and
WHEREAS, we acknowledge there are systemic barriers that reduce the likelihood of
those with disabilities enjoying equitable experiences and living independent, productive
lives within their communities, including full access to education, housing, employment
and recreational activities; and
WHEREAS, we strive to increase awareness and the openness to learn and acknowledge
each individual's contributions and change the attitudes and beliefs about the abilities of
those with development disabilities; and
WHEREAS, we recognize that equitable experiences and full inclusion is a matter of social
justice, and a shared responsibility of everyone to create welcoming and supporting
environments, policies, and systems for all.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, do hereby proclaim March 2023 as
"Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month" in the City of Bothell and promote both the
expectations and opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to be
successful and independent members of their communities because we recognize that our
communities are stronger when everyone participates.
Signed this 7th day of March, 2023.
Mason Thompson, Mayor
