HomeMy Public PortalAboutAll Citizens Access -- 2009-03-20 MinutesALL CITIZENS ACCESS COMMITTEE OF BREWSTER MARCH 20, 2009 MEETING MINUTES Meeting called to order at 2pm at the COA. Members present: Christine Glasheen, Brian Ladley, Jean Sears, Robert Steinmann, Maureen Steinmann, James Geisler, advocate. Members not present: Marge Geisler. We acknowledged acceptance of February 20, 2009 meeting minutes. Maureen mentioned the poster judging contest sponsored by JAM Specialists, Inc. which produces the Disability Access Directory. Members from the various town handicap committees will gather for a luncheon at Cape Abilities on April 7th and after lunch will judge the schoolchildren's posters. The winning artists receive prizes from JAM as well as have their posters printed in the Access Directory or a calendaz. Bob and Maureen Steinmann will represent Brewster. The committee discussed issues regarding the beach wheelchairs. It was decided to leave the arrangement for loaning out the beach wheelchairs as is, that is, through the COA. When the beach wheelchair is loaned out, the committee will again ask the user for feedback on the use of the chair -where did they use it; did they have any difficulty, do they have any suggestions on how its use can be improved. Maureen was going to check with the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center to see if availability of the beach wheelchair is listed in the 2009 Brewster Visitors Guide and on the beach map. Brian Ladley will prepare a new poster advertising the availability of the beach wheelchairs and present it at our next meeting. The committee reviewed the final facilities report to be submitted to the town manager next week by the Chair. It is being distributed to all town department heads as well as several other interested parties. The next phase of our town accessibility review will deal with Brewster's major recreational azeas, excluding beaches. The beaches will be the last part of our review. The areas we will review together on-site are: the Herring Run, Drummer Boy Park, and the Whitecaps ball field. The remaining we will review individually as we are able to: Captains Golf Course, Crosby Mansion. Jim Geisler wondered if our committee would write a letter to the Superintendent at Nickerson State Park re their Visitors Center. When it was rebuilt, the builders forgot to make at least one entry way wheelchair accessible. In the area of the ramp, the entrance doorway has an 8" step. The Chair will look into this and follow up. It was also suggested that our committee should meet with our new Town Planner, Sue Nevin. Everyone thought that was a great idea. The Chair will follow up on this. It was noted that our state representative Cleon Turner meets with constituents on the third Friday of each month at 11 am at the COA. One must sign up for this. This was mentioned because of an article in the Cape Cod Times re stimulus funded projects that might bypass the ADA review in order to move ahead faster with the projects. The Chair distributed copies of the article and a telephone number to call to see what it was all about. The telephone number came from Cathy Taylor, Asst Director of CORD, Cape Organization for the Rights of the Disabled. Our committee is now on CORD's email list which will e~al~le~ us tq be.~pd~ed re current disability issues. ~ - ~ ~ ~~ ~~- ~~ ~ ` -~ The meeting adjourned at 3:10 pm.
