HomeMy Public PortalAboutAll Citizens Access -- 2009-04-17 MinutesALL CITIZENS ACCESS COMMITTEE OF BREWSTER APRIL 17, 2009 MEETING MINUTES Meeting was called to order at 2pm at the COA. Members present: Christine Glasheen, Brian Ladley, Robert Steinmann, Maureen Steinmann, and James Geisler, advocate. Members not present: Jean Sears and Marge Geisler. We acknowledged acceptance of March 20, 2009 meeting minutes. Tim Gainey of the Drummer Boy Playground Committee described the plans for the update of the children's playground. Their committee included `accessibility' in their planning and, hence, the updated Drummer Boy Playground will be accessible to all. Tim wanted our committee to review these plans to see if any changes needed to be made. ACAC approved the plans wholeheartedly because they included equipment that met ADA standards. The only question was about the playground surface which the Chair was going to look into with Nancy White of M.E.O'Brien and sons, Inc. who designed the playground. Maureen mentioned that she presented the first phase of ACAC's accessibility survey to the selectmen at their April 6t" meeting. Brian Ladley and Jim Geisler also attended. Maureen and Bob Steinmann were judges in the annual disability poster contest sponsored by JAMS. The winning drawings are published in the Cape Cod Disability Access Directory as well as in a fundraising calendar, samples of which they displayed. Beach Wheelchair Update: It was noted by the Chair that the availability of the beach wheelchair is mentioned in the Visitors Guide Book and on the beach map within. Brian designed an informational poster for the Visitors Center and COA to advertise the availability of the beach wheelchair. It was noted that the Brewster Inn and Chowder House has recently installed a ramp at their side entrance. The Chair will write them thanking them for making their establishment wheelchair accessible. Jim Geisler will contact the superintendent of Nickerson State Park to ask if it is possible to make their Visitor's Center wheelchair accessible. When the visitor's center was rebuilt, steps were put in at every entrance, thereby making it inaccessible for those with mobility disabilities. The Chair asked if there were any immediate needs before our last meeting in June that they would like to have presented to the town for consideration. The members will think about this and review any requests at our next meeting. The Chair mentioned two potential special requests: First: See if the DPW could set up the boardwalk at Linnell Landing and Crosby Landing sometime in May rather than late June; Second: See if something could be done about the survey suggestion from Epoch to have a designated parking area for their van and possibly other assisted-living vans at Drummer Boy Park during the summer Sunday concerts whereby there residents could stay on the van and still be close enough to hear the music. It was noted that help for future accessibility projects possibly could come from: Brewster's Eagle Scouts, the AmeriCorp participants, or even students from Cape Cod Technical High School. It was decided that our next meeting will by an on-site review of three of Brewster's recreational areas: Drummer Boy Farm, Herring Run/Grist Mill, and Whitecaps Ball Field. The committee will meet at 2pm on Friday, May 15, at Drummer Boy Farm, weather permitting. The meeting adjourned at 3:15pm. Respectfully submitted by Maureen Steinmann
