HomeMy Public PortalAboutAll Citizens Access -- 2009-06-19 MinutesALL CITIZENS ACCESS COMMITTEE OF BREWSTER June 19, 2009 Meeting was called to order at 2:OOpm at the COA. Members present: Christine Glasheen, Jean Sears, Maureen Steinmann. Brian Ladley arrived later. Members not present: Robert Steinmann; also, James Geisler, advocate. We acknowledged acceptance of the May 15, 2009 meeting; minutes. Due to the heavy rain, our re-scheduled on-site reviews of Drummer Boy Park, the Grist Mill/Herring Run area, the Whitecaps Ball Field, and our visit to the Captains Golf Course had to be cancelled. The Chair distributed information sheets re these recreational areas. Members will be reviewing these recreational areas as well as the town beaches as they use them this summer. All will be discussed at our meeting in September. The chair wrote to the Brewster Inn and Chowder House thanking them for making their establishment accessible by having a ramp built at their main entrance. Police Chief Koch will have Lt. Bausch check out the feasibility of having a special parking spot for Epoch's van at the summer concerts at Drummer Boy. This is following up on a suggestion made by Epoch in our 2008 survey. At the same time Chief Koch mentioned that they are checking into funding for an automatic door opener for the outside door to the Police Station. Also, the inner lobby doors lock at 11 pm and anyone entering the station has to use the lobby telephone on the wall. Chief Koch wondered about the accessibility of that phone and the Chair said she and her husband, Robert, would check it out for him. The Crosby Landing and Linnell Landing boardwalks have been put in place. The bench at Linnell Landing was rotted and therefore not set up. The boardwalk at Crosby's is good, but the "T" at the end might need some adjustment, if possible, to reduce its slope. The chair wrote to DPW's Bob Bersin and thanked him for setting up these boardwalks earlier than usual and shared our thoughts/concerns re the boardwalk set-ups with him. Peter Johnson of the Brewster Conservation Trust called Maureen to let our committee know of plans to have an accessible pathway on the south side of the Musuem of Natural History. He will keep our committee updated. The Herring Run/Mill Site Committee and the town are working to improve safety and drainage issues at the mill site. In their plan is one van accessible handicap parking spot; presently, there are none. Dana Condit, the Chair of the Mill Site Committee and Alewives Committee, hopes with our committee's help to make a wheelchair accessible area on each side of the road. He will be in touch with the Chair when discussions are being held. In this regard, our committee discussed the use of bricks and pavers for use in an accessible walkway. The concern is that winter ice would lift the edges of these stones, causing a tripping hazard or impeding awheelchair/walker user. The consensus seems to be that the best material for the walkway is composite wood such as used at the National Seashore Park. Brian prepared the committee's return address labels, some of which will be used to get feedback from beach wheelchair users. The meeting ended at 3:OSpm. Our next meeting will be on September 18, 2009. Respectfully submitted by Maureen Steinmann ~0: ~ i"u 9Z 1Ji~ ~~~.
