HomeMy Public PortalAbout10102023 Domestic Violence Awareness Month PROCLAMATION National Domestic Violence Awareness Month WHEREAS, domestic violence is defined by the US Department of Justice as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another partner and made up more than 45% of all crimes against people in 2022; and WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month was launched nationwide in October 1987 as a way to connect and unite individuals and organizations working on domestic violence issues, with much progress made to support victims and survivors, to hold abusers accountable, and to create and update legislation to further these goals; and WHEREAS, domestic violence is an epidemic which can affect individuals of any community regardless of age, economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality, and is exacerbated by societal and cultural factors like racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination which help to perpetuate domestic violence and make finding safety even more difficult for some victims; and WHEREAS, preventing domestic violence requires the collective voice of individuals, families, community organizations, and institutions, each of which is uniquely situated to transform our communities; and WHEREAS, the City of Bothell reaffirms its commitment to providing support to victims of domestic violence through the Municipal Court and the Bothell City Attorney’s Office Domestic Violence Unit and by connecting community members to advocacy and support organizations locally and nationally. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do hereby proclaim October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in the City of Bothell and join with others across Washington and the nation in supporting survivors of domestic violence, as well as local programs, state coalitions, national organizations, and other agencies who are committed to increasing public awareness and sending a clear message that domestic violence is not tolerated in Bothell.
