PROCLAMATION
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
WHEREAS, domestic violence is defined by the US Department of Justice as a pattern of abusive behavior
in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another partner
and made up more than 45% of all crimes against people in 2022; and
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month was launched nationwide in October 1987 as a way to
connect and unite individuals and organizations working on domestic violence issues, with much progress
made to support victims and survivors, to hold abusers accountable, and to create and update legislation
to further these goals; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence is an epidemic which can affect individuals of any community regardless of
age, economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality, and is exacerbated by
societal and cultural factors like racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of
discrimination which help to perpetuate domestic violence and make finding safety even more difficult for
some victims; and
WHEREAS, preventing domestic violence requires the collective voice of individuals, families, community
organizations, and institutions, each of which is uniquely situated to transform our communities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bothell reaffirms its commitment to providing support to victims of domestic
violence through the Municipal Court and the Bothell City Attorney’s Office Domestic Violence Unit and by
connecting community members to advocacy and support organizations locally and nationally.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do hereby proclaim October as
“Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in the City of Bothell and join with others across Washington and
the nation in supporting survivors of domestic violence, as well as local programs, state coalitions, national
organizations, and other agencies who are committed to increasing public awareness and sending a clear
message that domestic violence is not tolerated in Bothell.
Signed this 10th day of October, 2023.
