HomeMy Public PortalAboutBikeways Committee -- 2009-12-07 MinutesMINUTES of the meeting of the BREWSTER BIKEWAYS COMMITTEE
Held Wednesday, December 7, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. at the Brewster Town Hall, Meeting Room B
Voting Members present: Marc Weiss, Chair; Bob Bersin, DPW; Andi Genser, Chief Koch, BPD
Non-Voting Members present: Sue Leven, Planning Department
The meeting was called to order at 4:40 and the minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Regarding regional bike planning, Marc was able to contact John Fallender of Orleans, the Lower
Cape Cod representative of MassBike. There is an initial regional meeting planned for the lower
Cape Cod towns. It will take place in Brewster at the Police Dept. Marc will follow up with John.
This association with MassBike will allow us another venue to promote safe biking in Brewster.
A discussion of signage followed. Bob Bersin brought in sample of signs. We have about 15 signs
that are 18" X 24", green/white that picture a bicycle and the words "bike route" along the bottom.
We also have about 15 of the small signs that have the letters "CCRT", which stands for Cape Cod
Rail Tr~Ail. After some discussion, we decided that using the 18" X 24" signs with editing along the
bottom would be more cost efficient than buying new ones. Instead of "bike route", it would have
an arrow and CCRT. We also discussed having similar signage with a "P" to designate parking for
the CCRT. The committee agreed that we should stay with a theme for design {colors, size, etc}.
Marc will meet with Selectmen Ed Lewis to discuss funding once Bob gives him an estimate for the
costs. We also agreed that these installations are needed at 6A by the intersections of Millstone,
Thad Ellis, Underpass, Harwich, Long Pond and Tubman Roads. We further discussed the
possibility of encouraging those who come from Setucket Road in Dennis to use Slough Road and
hook up with the CCRT in Harwich. This idea could be further discussed at the regional meeting of
the Cape Cod section of Mass Bike. This initial signage phase, directing cyclists to the CCRT can
be followed by a second phase of signage on the trail directing bikers to nearby convenient
Brewster locations.
Andi talked with the Chamber of Commerce about the Brewster in Bloom weekend. The idea of a
bike rodeo was well received. Andi will meet with the Bloom Committee and discuss this further in
January. The Drummer Boy property was suggested by the Bloom committee, but we agreed to look
at the schools for their use instead. At the suggestion of Sue Leven, Andi will get in touch with
Wendy Allegrone at Brewster Recreation to discuss this event with her. Andi will also coordinate
the event around the other events to we limit competition with the rodeo. There will also be a
contin ent of cyclists in the parade to promote safe bicycling in Brewster.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:35 pm. The next meeting of the Bikeways Committee will be on
Monday, January 4` at 4:30 pm, at the Police Station. All meetings through June of 2010 have been
scheduled at the Police Station.
