PROCLAMATION
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
WHEREAS, for the past several years, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student
Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness have sponsored National Hunger and Homelessness
Awareness Week; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the proclamation is to educate the public about the many reasons people are
hungry and homeless, including the shortage of affordable housing in Bothell for low-income residents;
and to encourage support for homeless assistance services providers as well as community service
opportunities for students and school service organizations; and
WHEREAS, no parent should have to send a child to school hungry, no baby should be without the comfort
of the nourishment needed for mental and physical growth; no elderly person’s health should be
jeopardized by lack of appropriate foods; and
WHEREAS, all people should have access to safe, health, and affordable homes within their communities;
and
WHEREAS, the rising cost of housing, lack of publicly owned affordable housing; and the aftermath of the
COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated both food insecurity and the homelessness crisis; and
WHEREAS, the City has partnered with many organizations committed to sheltering and providing services
to as we as meals and food supplies to people experiencing homelessness; and
WHEREAS, the Bothell City Council has prioritized developing a housing strategy in the Council’s 2040
Vision and Strategic Priorities document that would include opportunities for a variety of housing types to
serve all income levels; and
WHEREAS, the Bothell City Council has also prioritized developing a human services plan in the Council’s
2040 Vision and Strategic Priorities document that would address food scarcity and hunger challenges
faced by Bothell residents; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, on behalf of the City Council, do
hereby proclaim November 12-18, 2023 to be Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week throughout the
City of Bothell.
