HomeMy Public PortalAbout11142023 Native American Heritage Month PROCLAMATION Native American Heritage Month WHEREAS, Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each November as a time of recognition for the significant contributions of the Indigenous peoples that have inhabited this land from time before colonization and incorporation; and WHEREAS, Washington state is home to 29 federally recognized Indigenous tribes and well over 300,000 Washington residents identify as American Indian, Alaska Native, or Indigenous; and WHEREAS, before incorporation, the land that we now call Bothell was first inhabited by the s-tsah- PAHBSH or “Willow People”, who were members of a larger group called the hah-chu-AHBSH, or “People of the Lake” and the Duwamish Tribe; and WHEREAS, Indigenous people were separated from their homelands due to battles, genocide, and wester expansion and while honoring the customs and accomplishments of Native Americans, we also acknowledge our nation’s history of settler colonialism that has inflicted violence and deprivation upon Indigenous people; and WHEREAS, despite the attempted eradication of Indigenous communities, Native Americans continue to live, learn, work, and contribute to the community in Bothell. They have rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories. NOW THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do hereby proclaim November as Native American Heritage Month in the City of Bothell and encourage our community to actively seek knowledge about the original inhabitants of North America and commit to preserve Native American heritage and traditions for generations to come.
