HomeMy Public PortalAbout11142023 Diabetes Awareness Month PROCLAMATION Diabetes Awareness Month WHEREAS, Diabetes Awareness Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the more than 37 million Americans living with Diabetes, especially those within our community, who inspire us to advocate for medical and societal advances that make community education and life-saving treatments more accessible; and WHEREAS, over 10% of Americans have Type 1, Type 2, or gestational diabetes, and tens of millions more are at risk for developing this chronic disease which affects how the body turns food into energy; and WHEREAS, though the medical community has made great strides in helping individuals manage their symptoms, many in our community still contend with the daily challenges of managing blood sugar levels, the dangers of long-term complications, and the costs associated with life-saving medicine; and WHEREAS, awareness of the risk factors and warning signs of Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes can lead to better outcomes for patients and is crucial to preventing long-term effects and complications of this disease; and WHEREAS, our community is made up of individuals who live with Diabetes themselves, families who support loved ones with Diabetes, medical professionals who care for Diabetic patients, scientists who help develop innovative medicine to treat Diabetes, and community advocates who support Diabetes education and awareness. Now, therefore, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do hereby proclaim November as Diabetes Awareness Month in the City of Bothell and encourage all in our community to join in activities that raise Diabetes awareness and help prevent, treat, and manage this disease.
