HomeMy Public PortalAbout2011_06_14_R078 Bike and Pedestrian Friendly CommunityThe Town of Leesburg, Virginia PRESENTED: June 14, 2011 RESOLUTION NO. 2011 -078 ADOPTED: June 14, 2011 A RESOLUTION: ESTABLISHING A GOAL OF BEING A BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY COMMUNITY WHEREAS: it is recognized that bicycling and walking are healthy activities and lifestyles; and WHEREAS, bicycling and walking also represent alternative modes of transportation compared to cars; and WHEREAS, establishing a goal of being a "Bicycle Friendly Community" and a "Walk Friendly Community as designated by the League of American Bicyclists and Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, promotes a healthier, more environmentally friendly and accessible community, and will enhance the life for Leesburg residents of all ages. THEREFORE RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia as follows: SECTION I. That the Mayor and Town Council establish a goal of becoming a "Bicycle Friendly Community" and a "Walk Friendly Community." SECTION II. Direct the Town Manager to work within the existing budget to develop an action plan with specific time lines and target dates and achieve objectives that: Promote public education and outreach; Focus planning and engineering efforts to emphasize bicycling and walking as viable transportation methods as well as recreation; Direct enforcement of laws encouraging bike and pedestrian safety; and Provide for on -going evaluation of efforts. A RESOLUTION: ESTABLISHING A GOAL OF BEING A BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY COMMUNITY SECTION III. Identify specific budget options for future consideration to achieve the plan's objectives. SECTION IV. Utilize appropriate Town Commissions and Committees as needed to evaluate and provide input into appropriate objectives. SECTION V. Report to Council on these initiatives on a quarterly basis PASSED this 14 day of June, 2011.
