DESIGN REVIEW BOARD
18 MAIN STREET
HOPKINTON, MA 01748 (508) 497-9755
Minutes of Meeting – July 21, 2015
The Hopkinton Design Review Board
At 7:30p.m., Jeff Doherty called the meeting to order.
met in Room 211 at the Town Hall, 18 Main Street, Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
Present
85 West Main Street – Starbucks Coffee
: Jeff Doherty, Jeanette Thomson, Gail Fallon, Ria McNamara, Shawn McGuinness and
Jennifer Burke, Principal Planner
Andy Serrato, Serrato Signs, was present to represent Starbucks Coffee. Mr. Serrato Presented the sign package. The first sign presented was the free standing monument sign. Mr. Serrato has no information
on materials or design. The Board would like to know what the structure is made of, dimensions and
landscaping, etc. The Board asked Ms. Burke to send a letter to the property owner requesting he attend the next meeting to present the monument sign. Mr. Serrato will come back as well to review the “face”.
There are two signs proposed on the building walls. The first is the letters “Starbucks Coffee” it will be externally lit by 4 gooseneck lamps. The letters will be 14” tall and 3” in depth. They are white with black capping. The total sign length is 18’ 10”. There is 6’ between the words. There was a discussion
about the letter placement. It was determined that there is 10” above the letters and 10” below. This was acceptable to the Board. The second wall sign proposed was a disc with the logo. Mr. Serrato was told that no internal illuminiation was allowed. He will change the spec to read external illuminiation. Ms.
Thomson and Ms. McNamara noted that the building now has louvers on it in the same location where the sign is proposed. There needs to be some clarification as to placement before the Board can approve the
sign. Ms. McNamara indicated that she felt the disc was too big for the scope of the building especially
with the louvers in place. Mr. Serrato will review the building and return with a placement that makes sense.
Mr. Serrato also noted that Starbucks is proposing a vinyl decal in the door windows as a safety
precaution. The Board noted that the window has muntins so lettering would be redundant and unnecessary. Mr. Serrato agreed and said that if the muntins are there the window decal will not be
applied.
At this time the Board agreed with the wall lettering as is and Mr. Serrato will need to return with the logo disc and the Starbucks face of the monument sign.
Anne Beauchamp, 6 Angel’s Way asked how the signs on the walls are lit. She was told externally by gooseneck lights. She also asked if the logo will be domed or flat. She was told flat.
