PROCLAMATION
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
WHEREAS, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated every third Monday in January as a time to remember
and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and
WHEREAS, Dr. King, along with countless advocates and activists for racial and intersectional forms of
justice, made significant contributions to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s and impacted the course
of American history; and
WHEREAS, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service,
meant to encourage all Americans to contribute to building a Beloved Community through unity, service,
and transformation; and
WHEREAS, Martin Luther King Dr. Day provides the opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy by working
towards a more just and equitable society in which every community member is valued on the basis of
their race, ethnicity, culture, religion, abilities, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bothell is proud to offer opportunities to engage in service activities locally and
provide resources to learn more about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do hereby proclaim January 15th,
2024 as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the City of Bothell and encourage every one of our community
members to participate in a personally meaningful service project so that we can eradicate injustice and
create lasting change that will contribute to building our Beloved Community here in Bothell.
