PROCLAMATION
Black History Month
WHEREAS, Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements of Black and African
Americans and the inextricable role that they play in United States History; and
WHEREAS, Black History Month was officially recognized by President Gerald Ford in 1976 after more than
sixty years of research and advocacy by historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland who
founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History; and
WHEREAS, the omission of history and contributions of Black and African Americans from textbooks and
other literature has contributed to pervasive systemic racism in the United States, such that it is essential
to honor the extraordinary contributions made by Black Americans throughout history; and
WHEREAS, we celebrate the legacy of Black Americans whose power to lead, to overcome, and to expand
the meaning and practice of American democracy has helped our nation become a more fair and just
society; and
WHEREAS, it is a moral imperative that we learn about, shed light upon, and condemn the inhumanity and
inequities that Black and African Americans continue to experience and endure, while celebrating the
countless achievements and contributions of Black organizers, scholars, artists, and community members.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do hereby proclaim February 2024 as
“Black History Month” in the City of Bothell and reaffirm the City of Bothell’s commitment to fighting anti-
Black discrimination through its values, policies, and practices.
Signed this 6th day of February, 2024.
