Town Successfully Transplants 29 Trees Saved from
Construction Project
The trees replace some of the canopy lost from the EF0 tornado in February.
Leesburg, VA (June 3, 2020) – The Town of
Leesburg, with the help of Tree Movers, LLC, has
successfully transplanted 29 trees, which were set
to be removed as part of the Route 7 and
Battlefield Interchange construction.
Rather than be cut down, the trees were relocated
to the Route 15 Bypass/Battlefield interchange,
Robinson Park, Raflo Park, and Ida Lee Park. These
trees help replace some of the 81 trees that were
lost on town owned property following the EF0
tornado in February 2020.
“It is truly great that we can take condemned trees and give them new life in another part of
town,” said Urban Forester Tyler Wright. “These trees have been strategically placed to not
only replace the canopy lost during the storm but to keep our town cleaner, greener, cooler,
and safer.”
The majority of the trees were over eight inches in diameter, at 4.5 feet above the ground level,
and between 30 to 45 feet tall. An aggressive plan is in place, Wright said, that will help keep
the trees hydrated and nourished so they continue to grow and create a more resilient and
sustainable canopy in the town.
“It’s not every day you see a large tree like this being moved ,” Wright said. “In the long run, I
think we made the correct decision to save these trees.”
