Artists Sought for New Art Mural on Harrison Street
Deadline for submissions is November 30, 2020.
Leesburg, VA (October 26, 2020) – The Leesburg Commission on Public Art (COPA) is seeking
design submissions for the installation of mural on the retaining wall on the east side of
Harrison Street between South Street SE and Depot Court SE.
The mural would cover the entire wall, which measures 167.5 ‘ long (a total of six different
sections) and averages 5.1’ high. The total size of the mural area is approximately 834 square
feet wide. The artist or artist team will be responsible for installing the artwork directly on to
the concrete retaining wall.
The design of the mural should be relevant to its location. Suggestions include nature reflecting
the nearby parks, cycling, or themes related with the grain mill that was built in 1899 and
operated until the mid-1980s on the current day location of Tuscarora Mills restaurant. Artists
are not limited to these ideas and all submissions will be considered.
The call is open to all artists and artist teams in the Washington, D.C. metro region. Emerging
artists and artist teams are encouraged to apply. There is no requirement for previous public art
experience.
All submissions will be reviewed by an advisory panel of four (4) artists chosen from COPA’s Art
Advisory Panel. The panel will send their final recommendations to COPA, which will review the
recommendations prior to presenting them to the Leesburg Town Council. Once the Town has
approved the design, the artist(s) will be notified.
The winning artist or artist team will receive an award of $1,000 for design and installation of
the mural and $1,500 to cover supplies.
