PROCLAMATION
Women’s History Month
WHEREAS Girl Scouts are “Honest and fair,” we recognize Stacey Abrams, who after observing the mismanagement of a 2018
election, launched Fair Fight, an organization dedicated to ensure the voice of all voters could be heard in 20 battleground states;
and
WHEREAS Girl Scouts are “Friendly and helpful,” we recognize Clara Barton, nicknamed the “Angel of the Battlefield” for her
nursing service during the Civil War, who later founded the American Red Cross; and
WHEREAS Girl Scouts are “Considerate and caring,” we recognize Frances Perkins, who was President Roosevelt’s Secretary of
Labor, and the first woman to hold a Presidential Cabinet Position. Frances helped get America out of the Great Depression and
facilitated the admission of more than 180,000 Jewish refugees into the United States; and
WHEREAS Girl Scouts are “Courageous and strong,” we recognize Ruby Bridges who at just 6 years old became the first African
American girl to integrate an elementary school in the south, a daily act that required the protection of 4 federal marshals, as she
walked past threatening mobs; and
WHEREAS Girl Scouts are “Responsible for what we say and do,” we recognize Elizebeth Smith Friedman, a cryptographer who
during World War II cracked the German Enigma Code and a Nazi spy ring that planned to invade the United States through South
America, and upheld an oath to keep her role a secret until her death; and
WHEREAS Girl Scouts “Respect ourselves and others,” we recognize Eleanor Roosevelt who created the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, which was based on the US Bill of Rights but written to be sensitive and acceptable to all religions, cultures, and
ideologies; and
WHEREAS Girl Scouts “Respect authority,” we recognize Ruth Bader Ginsburg who successfully sued to enforce the Equal Pay Act
as the 107th Justice of the Supreme Court used her written dissents to encourage lawmakers to enact better laws; and
WHEREAS Girl Scouts “Use resources wisely,” we recognize Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts and a master
fundraiser who worked to ensure that the diverse group she created would always be “girl-led.”; and
WHEREAS Girl Scouts “Make the world a better place,” we recognize Rosa Parks, honored as “the First Lady of civil rights” by
Congress, who refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, an act which precipitated the Montgomery Bus
Boycott; and
WHEREAS Girl Scouts “Are as sister to every Girl Scout,” we recognized Sylvia Acevedo, who was encouraged as part of earning a
Girl Scout science badge to build a model rocket and later became a rocket scientist for NASA; and
WHEREAS we learn about history so we will not repeat our mistakes. We have all been helped through the bravery and resilience
of those honored and those yet unknown. Following their example, we will make the world a better place for all.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do hereby proclaim March 2024 as Women’s History Month
in the City of Bothell and join in honoring and celebrating all women by recognizing their contributions to our community and
country.
