Park Commission Chair Ann Thies presided. 1) Call to Order Commissioners present: Ann Thies, Ben Benson, Madeleine Linck, Paul Jaeb, Janet White, and Chris Hilberg (arrived 5:15 p.m.) Commissioners absent: Bill Waytas Also present: Jodi Gallup and Carolyn Smith 2) Uniform Park Signs It was reported that after reviewing the sign ordinance, it was found that the Public/Semi- public zoning district does not allow for pylon signs. The City Council discussed this issue at the July 21st Council meeting and directed the Planning Department to draft changes to the ordinance to be reviewed by the Planning Commission on August 11tn Jaeb distributed monument sign examples to the Park Commissioners. He picked out three examples specific to park signs. The base costs on these signs start at $3,000 each. Gallup stated her previous research showed that a sand blasted pylon sign would be about $85 per square foot and $125 for the posts. The finished product would be less than $1,000 for a small 3 x 3 sign and around $1,500 to $2,000 for a larger sign. The Park Commissioners agreed it would be much more cost effective to have the proposed pylon signs in the City Parks verses monument signs. Discussion occurred regarding the required font size in the sign ordinance depending on traffic speed. There was some concern with the letters being too large, which would cause the signs with long park names to be larger. It was suggested that a mock sign be created with the appropriate letter sizes from the ordinance for Holy Name Park on County Road 24. This would give the Park Commission an idea of how large the signs need to be. It was also suggested that staff contact Three Rivers Park District to question how they conducted their process in creating uniform park signs. There was a general consensus that the Park Commission needed more time to determine the appropriate size of the park signs and that the Planning Commission should wait another month before reviewing the sign ordinance. 3) Adjourn A motion was made by Benson, seconded by Linck, and passed unanimously to adjourn the meeting.
