PROCLAMATION
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
WHEREAS, April 2024 marks the 23rd anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month which draws
attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and has implications for every community
member; and
WHEREAS, Sexual assault is pervasive. Every 68 seconds, someone is sexually assaulted in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, Over 53% of women and over 29% of men reported experiencing contact sexual violence in
their lifetime, 47% of all transgender people have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives, and
young people under age 18 account for about 44% of reported sexual assaults; and
WHEREAS, Sexual violence can impact people of any age, gender, religion, ethnicity, and identity. Black,
Indigenous, and other people of color, people living in poverty, LGBTQ+ people, elders, people with
disabilities, and others who have been historically oppressed are disproportionately affected by sexual
violence in significant and complex ways; and
WHEREAS, The City of Bothell takes a strong stand against sexual assault, and is dedicated to eliminating
this and other acts of gender-based violence that threaten the safety and well-being of all individuals,
children, and families; and
WHEREAS, By working together as a community, we can stand up to and actively disrupt harmful attitudes
and behaviors that contribute to sexual violence, and alleviate the trauma of sexual violence by ensuring
supportive resources are available to all survivors.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mason Thompson, Mayor of the City of Bothell, do hereby proclaim April 2024 as
Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the City of Bothell joining advocates and communities across the
country in taking action to prevent sexual violence and to stand with survivors and victims of sexual
assault.
